Square Footage & Flooring Calculator

Find the square footage of a room and how many boxes of flooring or tile to buy. Nothing leaves your browser.

How it works

Area = length × width. Area with waste = area × (1 + waste%). Boxes = area with waste ÷ coverage per box, rounded up.

FAQ

How do I calculate square footage of a room?

Multiply length by width in feet. A 12 by 14 ft room is 168 sq ft.

How much extra flooring should I buy?

Most installers suggest adding about 10% for cuts and mistakes, more for diagonal or patterned layouts. Change the waste box to match.

How many boxes do I need?

Divide the area with waste by the sq ft in one box, then round up. 168 sq ft plus 10% is 184.8 sq ft, which is 10 boxes of 20 sq ft.

Does it work for non-rectangular rooms?

Not directly. Split the room into rectangles, calculate each one, and add the areas together.
