Compare a measured value with the accepted value. Nothing leaves your browser.
Percent error = |measured − accepted| ÷ |accepted| × 100. The signed value is positive when you measured too high and negative when too low.
Percent error = |experimental − accepted| ÷ |accepted| × 100. If the accepted value is 50 and you measured 47, the error is 3 ÷ 50 × 100 = 6%.
The accepted (true or theoretical) value is the reference number you compare your measurement against, such as a textbook value.
The standard formula uses the absolute value so it is never negative. This tool also shows the signed percentage so you can see whether you were over or under.
Dividing by zero is undefined, so percent error cannot be calculated when the accepted value is 0.
